Overview of AVB

Ascot Volunteer Bureau is a small local charity which is based in South Ascot (Berks). Our primary objective is to provide transport for the older residents of Ascot, Sunninghill and Sunningdale to medical appointments. They can include appointments at the GP surgery, hospital, dentist, chiropodist, chiropracter, et cetera. This leaflet contains further information for potential clients of the service.
Our drivers are all volunteers who will pick you up from your home, take you to your appointment, either wait for you or arrange to pick you up on completion of your appointment and then drive you home.
There is an article in Ascot Matters in the form of questions and answers which provides useful information for potential volunteers on the work that we do. There is one correction to the information in that article. With effect from April 2011, and in line with HMRC rules on mileage rates, AVB drivers now charge 45p per mile for longer journeys and £4 for local journeys.
Also, check out this leaflet on volunteering.
Our other objective, subject to available funding, is to provide a limited number of lifelines to any elderly individuals who require them but would struggle to pay the monthly rent on them. A lifeline is a personal alarm system which allows an elderly person to seek help if they have a fall or feel unwell. See the Lifelines page for further information.
We can be contacted in the office on 01344 625520. The office is manned from 10 to 12, Mon-Fri but you can leave a message at other times and we will get back to you. You can also email us.

The 2012 AGM was held at the Ascot Day Centre on Wednesday evening, 23rd May 2012. In the Chairman's report Janet King thanked the various benefactors for their support and all the volunteers and committee members for their contributions; she described various changes that had been implemented over the last 12 months; and she concluded by thanking June Martin for hosting the AVB Christmas party in November 2011, and for providing all the hospitality at her own expense. In her report Eileen Hayward, our Coordinator, indicated that 623 jobs were completed in the 12 month period to the end of March 2012. There had been a net increase of two drivers in the year. Finally, Brian King, the Treasurer, gave a brief summary of the accounts for 2011-12 which saw a small surplus of £690. All the officers and committee members were re-elected with the exception of June Martin who has decided to retire. Grateful thanks were offered for all the hard work that June has put in over 30+ years.
