Bureau closed for two weeks during August. The bureau is, as usual, closed for two weeks during the second half of August. These are the weeks commencing the 13th and 20th. It will open for business again on Tuesday 28th August, the day after the bank holiday.

Ascot Golden Age Retirement Fair will take place at Ascot Racecourse on Wednesday 15th August, 2012 from 10am to 4pm. We will have a stand there again this year in a bid to attract new volunteers. Come and talk to us and see if our setup fits in with your requirements and availability. We will be handing out our leaflet.

Sunninghill & Ascot Parish Council, one of our supporters, is holding a Diamond Jubilee Beacon event at Victory Field, Sunninghill on Monday 4th June, 2012 from 7.30 to 10.30pm. Entrance is free and there will be a bar and barbeque. The council is looking for extra marshals for the event. If you can help please contact them directly.

Sunningdale Parish Council, another of our supporters, is also holding Diamond Jubilee celebrations. A music festival will be held at Broomhall Recreation Ground on Monday 4th June, 2012 from 2pm to 8pm. Full details can be found on the Parish Council website.

Ascot Golden Age Retirement Fair took place at Ascot Racecourse on Wednesday 24th August, 2011. An encouraging number of visitors took away leaflets on volunteering and on the service that we provide.

The 2011 AGM was held at the Ascot Day Centre on Wednesday evening, 25th May 2011. 15 people attended. In the Chairman's report Janet King thanked the various benefactors for their support and all the volunteers and committee members for their contributions; she described the work that had been done over the last 12 months to attract more volunteers, and concluded by thanking June Martin for hosting the AVB Christmas party in November 2010, and for providing all the hospitality at her own expense. In her report Eileen Hayward, our Coordinator, indicated that 689 jobs were completed in the 12 month period to the end of April 2011. Four drivers were lost, six recruited and one returned plus we also recruited one additional volunteer for the office. Finally, Brian King, the Treasurer, gave a brief summary of the accounts for 2010-11 which saw a surplus of £1,392, and he described our general financial health and the funding challenges in the short to medium term. All the officers and committee members were re-elected with the exception of Margot Carpenter who has decided to retire.

Funding update & quarterly statistics. In February we very gratefully received a grant of £2,500 from our major supporter, the Sunninghill Fuel Allotment Trust. In the last quarter 157 jobs were completed, while there was a net increase of 1 driver (3 joined and 2 left). In addition, we have recruited one additional person to man the office.

Funding update & quarterly statistics. In the last quarter we have been pleased to receive a grant of £1,000 from the Ascot Fire Brigade Trust and a donation of £100 from the Probus Club of Ascot. 138 jobs were completed, while there was a net increase of 1 driver (2 joined, 1 rejoined and 2 left).

Margot's service to AVB recognised. At last night's RBWM Volunteers of the Year 2010 Awards Margot Carpenter was joint runner-up in the over 50s category in recognition of her long and invaluable service to AVB. Congratulations Margot - very well deserved.

Eileen becomes committee member & quarterly statistics. At this week's quarterly committee meeting Eileen Hayward, our new coordinator, was voted onto the committee. The number of jobs completed in the quarter was 192.

New Coordinator. Margot Carpenter announced at the last committee meeting that she proposed to retire after 26 years of service to the AVB, the majority of them in the coordinator's role. We thank Margot for all the hard, selfless work that she has put in over such a long period, without which the Bureau would have struggled. Eileen Hayward, who has been manning the office on Wednesdays, has agreed to take on the coordinator's role, officially with effect from today.

Ascot Golden Age Retirement Fair. As in previous years AVB had a stand at this event in late August at Ascot Racecourse to advertise what we do and to try to attract new volunteers. A dozen people expressed an initial interest in becoming volunteers.

Funding update & quarterly statistics. We are very pleased to hear that Berkshire Community Foundation has awarded AVB a Grassroots Grant of £1,100 for the current financial year. On the statistics front, the provisional number of jobs completed in the first quarter of our financial year was 192.

Update on drivers & office manning. In the six month period from October to April we have taken on 5 new drivers who have all been CRB-checked. Meanwhile, Freda Clinch ceased to man the office at the end of January. We wish to thank Freda for her years of service to the AVB.

Margot Carpenter, our coordinator, had an operation for a knee replacement earlier this week. We all wish her a speedy recovery. Meanwhile, volunteers and committee members are ensuring that the office continues to run as smoothly as possible in her absence.

Funding. Earlier this month we were delighted to receive £2,500 from the Sunninghill Fuel Allotment Trust. The trust has been our major supporter for many years now and it is gratifying that they continue to support us.

1571. We have joined the 21st century ... well almost! ... by replacing the answerphone with BT's 1571 service. This will allow incoming callers to leave a message when the line is busy.

Google map and contact details. It had been noticed that the map and contact details which Google produces against a search on Ascot Volunteer Bureau was incorrect. It was showing us as being in Sunningdale Village Hall!! This information was not input to the Google system by us. After a certain amount of pain we have eventually managed to correct the information and Google now shows the correct map and contact details.
